Stamping jewelry is one of the oldest techniques for decorating metal, from Egyptian to ancient Greece, and from China to Southwestern Native American jewelry. Here in the west, we’re familiar with the iconic jewelry of the masters of Native American and Mexican silversmiths. This class explores these classic techniques and how to use them to embellish your designs.

Large stamps are fantastic for covering more area with pattern. They can be expensive and rare to find, so students will learn how to make their own stamps - large and small. That way the perfect solution will always be at hand. We’ll modify existing stamps and make stamps from scratch from tool steel. Then we’ll use these stamps to create designs, like chasing lines to make borders, beaded and twisted lines.

Repoussé or die stamps are 2 part stamps, a hollow stamp and a matching positive shape that fits it. Using these stamps and blocks students will learn how to emboss raised designs. Then we’ll combine these with line stamps to make beautiful and intricate patterns.

And as a bonus, the teacher will demonstrate how to use a shot plate to make decorative elements. Then we combine these techniques to make some sterling jewelry during class.

Join us for this fun workshop that will transform how you use stamps to create ornament!
