Class Instructor: Eric Burris

Eric Burris

Eric Burris has been making Mokume-gane for nearly 15 years, and for half that time he has been teaching workshops on the technique. He first learned the sweat solder method, but discovered it was very problematic and difficult to make a good product. In graduate school, he was taught a more traditional method using modern metalsmithing tools and equipment. This process, called diffusion bonding, made for a better billet and therefore better ring stock and patterned sheet. Transitioning to a smaller studio, where blacksmithing tools would be out of place, Eric used the same ideas learned in school, but with affordable low-tech equipment. He continues to make high quality Mokume-gane today, and it is the dominant material used in his jewelry.
