Create ripples and waves in the surface of your silver with a torch. Then fuse gold leaf to the surface to create wonderful, abstract textures.

This online live zoom class will teach you all you need to know to prepare and reticulate your silver with a torch. Create fast, mixed metal and textured parts for your jewelry, or use these techniques to accent stone settings, pendants, earrings, rings, and more.

Techniques taught:

• Depletion gilding
• Annealing
• Reticulation

• Keum boo (fusing gold foil onto silver alloys)

When offered as a one day workshop, this zoom class is from 10-12:30 and 2:30-5pm, with a 2 hour lunch break.

Check out our free videos on how to set up to solder at home and how to use a home friendly butane torch to solder.

It’s not just a recording. You can ask questions live with your instructor.
With our live online class format, students can talk with the instructor, ask questions and get help.

Tools for this Class

This is a list of tools you’ll need to practice the techniques shown in class. A list of the specific models of tools with links to recommended suppliers for the best prices will be sent to you after registration If you have questions about the tool list, please contact us. In addition to these tools, you’ll need some of the basic jewelry tools from Jewelry 1 - Basics.

Burnisher (regular 1 - 1 1/2” burnisher ok, but a long burnisher is preferred, like 2 1/2” or longer for keum boo. Or an agate burnisher is excellent for keum boo)
Sterling solder: easy, medium and hard (1’ or 1 sheet of each)
1 quart crockpot or pickle pot (we need the pickle to be stable at a steaming hot temp)
Copper tongs (easiest for removing metal from the pickle)
Electric hot plate (to warm metal for keum boo, solid top preferred but you can use one with an open heating element if you use some copper or brass sheet on top of it to keep your work from falling through)
Leather gloves or similar to protect your hands from the heat (not too bulky, work gloves ok)
Sharp scissors
Brass brush
Metric ruler
Charcoal block, hard
Scriber or sewing needle in a handle
Toothpicks
Timer (timer on your smartphone or watch is fine)
Liver of sulphur gel patina, 2 oz. to create contrast between the silver and gold
Sturdy containers, like plastic yogurt containers, just for the patina and rinse water.
A computer, phone or tablet to use the free Zoom app for class
