Fancy Cut Stone Setting (online)

Learn about princess cuts, marquis, trillian, pears, and all those other stones you have in your collection that have corners! How do you set those? How do you keep them from chipping or breaking? Fancy cut stone setting walks you through a variety of settings that you can adapt to your own designs and use to set any shape with a point/corner!

In this class, Jenn Parnell walks you through how to create several settings, use prefabricated settings, and methods for setting stones. We will also talk about the anatomy of stones, different cuts, and what to look for when buying stones. 

Topics covered include:

-Fabrication of flat back bezels

-Fabrication of step/seated bezels

-Bezel setting preparation for fancy cut corners/points incudling cutting seats and pockets.

-Using engravers with stone setting

-V-Prong preparation and setting

-Fabrication of bar settings

-Setting techniques for bar settings

-Different styles of prongs for fancy cut stones

 

A kit of materials is included with this class and will be mailed to you. Please be sure that the address with your payment is the correct one for shipping.

 
About our interactive online classes
This class is online and uses the Zoom app/website. Through Zoom, you’ll be able to see demos and follow instructions, ask questions and interact with your instructor. Zoom is easy to use and free for students to use for class, and works on most devices, like phones (iphone, Android, etc), tablets (iPads, etc), and computers (Mac or PC).

This course meets for 6 weeks, 3 hours per week, for a total of 18 hours. Your instructor is also available during free Zoom office hours for questions and help.

Each class is also recorded and available for students to watch later, to review instructions or in case you missed a class.

Students work at home or in their studio. All of our recommended tools and the kit materials are chosen to be home studio friendly. We always choose the safest materials, chemicals and tools for you and the environment.

  • Soldering setup- soldering surface, pick, pickle and pot, third hand, flux and applicator

  • Bezel mandrel or mini horn anvil

  • Flexshaft or dremel
  • Riveting, goldsmiths, or chasing hammer
  • Seat check
  • Nylon jaw or plastic jaw pliers
  • Chain nose pliers

  • Setting burs
  • #40 flat engraver
  • #2/0 onglette engraver
  • Grs QC handpiece with tool holders or 2 engraver handpieces
  • Marquis, square, or other fancy cut cabochon- No bigger than 20mm long measurement, no smaller than 10mm long measurement
  • Silicone polishers and mandrels
  • Hard felt wheels, muslin buffs, or bristle brush polishers for flexshaft

Prerequisites:

Students should have a good understanding and comfort level with soldering, basic fabrication, using the flexshaft, and basic stone setting skills. 

Jewelry 1 and 2, and Stone Setting 1 or similar will give you these skills (online or in-person workshops ok)

This class is best for advanced beginners through advanced students
