Hand-Polished Riveting Hammer

$44.00

Description

This polished hammer has a slightly rounded face and wedge shaped end for riveting or texturing your metal with planish marks. The wedge end makes great "long" planish marks that can even mimic fur or plant textures.

By working the wedge end of the cross peen hammer in parallel rows across your metal you can make a fantastic, water like texture on your jewelry. If you rotate the metal as you hammer from the center towards the edge, you can make texture that radiates like rays around your piece. And if you go over your texture a second time, striking at 90° angle to your first rows, you can make a cross hatched or basket-weave texture.

This is also a great hammer for spreading nailhead style rivets made from wire.

Polishing your hammer is a traditional skill in metalsmithing, because shaping and polishing your hammer makes it easier to strike your metal without hitting the corners of your hammer, which mar the surface. The polished round hammer faces burnish and compact the metal to polish it as you leave a texture.

Buying a pre-polished hammer saves you time, and if it needs a little maintenance, restoring the polish is much easier than shaping a hammer from scratch! That's why I polish these hammers by hand for you - to give you a head start on your projects and a hammer that will enhance your metal as you work.
