What do you do if you don’t have the right tool? Make it!
An important part of jewelry is making and modifying tools. In this live Zoom class, you'll learn how to shape and polish hammers for better performance, and custom texture. You can use these same skills to repair your hammer face and remove nicks or scratches.
Students make custom stamps for decoration. We’ll forge, twist and grind steel to make custom tools, like a center punches, scribers, burnishers and scrapers. Annealing, hardening and tempering steel will also be demonstrated
Use these skills to reshape, reuse, and recycle tools, new and old into useful solutions for your jewelry.

A kit of materials is included with this class. Registered students receive a class kit by mail, shipped to the address used for registration. Please be sure to contact us at the time of registration with any updates re: where you want your kit shipped.
A handout is included with the class. A pdf of the handout is sent to students before the first day of class.

About Our Interactive Online Classes
This class is online and uses the Zoom app/website. Through Zoom, you’ll be able to see demos and follow instructions, ask questions and interact with your instructor. Zoom is easy to use and free for students to use for class, and works on most devices, like phones (iphone, Android, etc), tablets (iPads, etc), and computers (Mac or PC).
Each class is also recorded and available for students to watch later, to review instructions or in case you missed a class.
Students work at home or in their studio. All of our recommended tools and the kit materials are chosen to be home studio friendly.

N95 or similar mask to protect against steel dust
Blank hammers to polish (2)
Wet/dry sandpaper: 180, 320, 600-grit, 1 sheet each
Large 6-8” half round file Swiss cut 0 or 1 (a separate set for steel is recommended)
Needle files Set Swiss cut 2 (a separate set for steel is recommended)
Screw Mandrels (2 pc)
3 in 1 oil or honing oil
Flex shaft machine or Dremel
A computer, tablet or smartphone with the free Zoom app to join the class
In addition to these tools, the students will need the basic tools from the Jewelry 1 - Basics workshop (saw, saw blades, torch, files, etc.).
Class policies for refunds, transfers and cancelations.
Previous experience with jewelry fabrication (sawing, filing, using power tools), like successful completion of Jewelry 1 - Basics (online or in-person).
