Ancient Egyptian Jewelry (Online)

Ancient Egyptian jewelry is so beautiful and iconic that it has inspired design revivals and is still popular today. Want to learn more about it and make jewelry using techniques inspired by this iconic time in history? Then sign up for Eqyptian Jewelry with Jenn Parnell

In this class, students will learn art and jewelry history with studio techniques from the era of Ancient Egypt. Items of jewelry and their meaning and use in Egyptian society will be discussed.

Carving, personalized hieroglyphic cartouches, chasing, and beadwork will be covered among the techniques. Students will learn the design hallmarks, language, and materials of the time and how to design works that use the era as influence.

• History of Egyptian jewelry and an overview of its designs and techniques
• Faience, a particularly Egyptian material - how to make it and use it
• Hieroglyphs (including making your name in hieroglyphs)
• Jewelry forms: collars, pectorals and bracelets, rings, earrings, hair ornaments and girdles
• How did Egyptians make jewelry?
• Chasing and inlay
• Beading for wesekh collars
• Make a stirrup ring
• The role of jewelry in Egyptian society: amuletic, honors, funerary
• Materials and their meaning in ancient Egypt

About our interactive online classes
This class is online and uses the Zoom app/website. Through Zoom, you’ll be able to see demos and follow instructions, ask questions and interact with your instructor. Zoom is easy to use and free for students to use for class, and works on most devices, like phones (iphone, Android, etc), tablets (iPads, etc), and computers (Mac or PC).

This course meets for 4 weeks, 3 hours per week, for a total of 12 hours. Your instructor is also available during free Zoom office hours for questions and help.

Each class is also recorded and available for students to watch later, to review instructions or in case you missed a class.

Students work at home or in their studio. All of our recommended tools and the kit materials are chosen to be home studio friendly. We always choose the safest materials, chemicals and tools for you and the environment.


Tools required for this class

Students can adapt this class to their favorite jewelry technique that they already know, including fabrication, setting, lost wax, enameling and beading. You’ll need the same basic tools you already use to make your jewelry now. Or if you’re a beginner, you can use these tools to start making jewelry the Egyptian style.

Pliers; Needle nose, chain nose, and round nose pliers
Hammer - chasing hammer, ball peen hammer, regular claw hammer, or rawhide mallet
1mm drill
