In this class, students will learn art and jewelry history with studio techniques from the Art Nouveau era. The works of Lalique, Liberty and Co., and Mackintosh among others will be covered.

For the studio part,Jenn will cover techniques you can use now to make jewelry in the spirit of Art Nouveau: a take on plique-a-jour enameling, carving acrylic, and forging wire. Students will learn the design hallmarks, language, and materials of the time and how to design works that use the era as influence.

This class meets 4 times, once per week, for 3 hours per week. Total class time: 12 hours

Class includes free access to office hours with the instructor.

Class is held online through Zoom. Zoom is free and works on most phones, tablets and computers (Mac or PC). You’ll be able to watch demos and ask questions live with your teacher via your screen.

About Our Interactive Online Classes
This class is online and uses the Zoom app/website. Through Zoom, you’ll be able to see demos and follow instructions, ask questions and interact with your instructor. Zoom is easy to use and free for students to use for class, and works on most devices, like phones (iphone, Android, etc), tablets (iPads, etc), and computers (Mac or PC).

This course meets for 4 weeks, 3 hours per week, for a total of 12 hours. Your instructor is also available during free Zoom office hours for questions and help.

Each class is also recorded and available for students to watch later, to review instructions or in case you missed a class.

Students work at home or in their studio. All of our recommended tools and the kit materials are chosen to be home studio friendly. We always choose the safest materials, chemicals and tools for you and the environment.

Tools for this Class

Students can adapt this class to their favorite jewelry technique, including fabrication, setting, lost wax, enameling and beading. You’ll need the same basic tools you already use to make your jewelry now.

4 oz. cross peen hammer (riveting, goldsmithing or jewelers style)
steel bench block
torch- any size, but a larger butane torch or a Little Torch is easiest.
Jewelers saw frame
1mm twist drill
nitrile gloves
toothpicks or popsicle sticks
parchment paper
round nose pliers
needle file set of 6 or 12 Swiss cut 2

A computer, phone or tablet to use the free Zoom app for class

Students must have prior experience with jewelry making. This may be in fabrication (sawing, filing, soldering, etc), lost wax, enameling, metal clay, beadwork or other jewelry techniques. For this class, it is recommended that you know how to use a jewelers saw, power tools like a Dremel or flex shaft, and how to anneal and the basics of soldering. These are skills you can learn in Basic Jewelry 1 (online or in person).
