Electrolytic Etching- Etching without Acid

In this workshop, students will learn all about how to safely etch at home with the electrolytic etching process. Each student will create their own portable etching set-up at home and create at least two finished pieces of jewelry using the etching process.

The class will go over how the etching process works, available metal choices, troubleshooting, and several different resist options as well as finishing tips for etched pieces and how to use etching with other techniques.

No experience required to learn how to etch without acids!

Techniques taught:
• Introduction to the equipment, basic safety for etching
• Discussion: What is Electrolytic Etching?
• Resists: ○ Nail Polish ○ Sharpie
• Preparing metal pieces for etching
• Setting up your Electrolytic Bath and Etching
• Measuring your etch, cleaning your piece post-etch
• Forming and finishing your etched pieces

Tools for this Class

Students can adapt this class to their favorite jewelry technique that they already know, including fabrication, setting, lost wax, enameling and beading. You’ll need the same basic tools you already use to make your jewelry now.

  • Chain Nose Pliers
  • 1mm twist drill
  • Pin vise for drilling or other method of using the drill bit
  • Duct tape
  • Nail polish
  • Nail polish remover/acetone
  • Cotton rounds or paper towels
  • Scribe
  • Kosher salt (note: it must be kosher salt or pickling salt. Not iodized salt)
  • Nitrile gloves

About Our Interactive Online Classes

This class is online and uses the Zoom app/website. Through Zoom, you’ll be able to see demos and follow instructions, ask questions and interact with your instructor. Zoom is easy to use and free for students to use for class, and works on most devices, like phones (iphone, Android, etc), tablets (iPads, etc), and computers (Mac or PC).

This course meets for 2 weeks, 3 hours per week, for a total of 6 hours. Your instructor is also available during free Zoom office hours for questions and help.

Each class is also recorded and available for students to watch later, to review instructions or in case you missed a class.

Students work at home or in their studio. All of our recommended tools and the kit materials are chosen to be home studio friendly. We always choose the safest materials, chemicals and tools for you and the environment.

This class is open to beginners. There is a lot to learn in this class for any level, including intermediate students and beyond.
