Electrolytic Etching- Etching without Acid

In this workshop, students will learn all about how to safely etch at home with the electrolytic etching process. Each student will create their own portable etching set-up and create at least two finished pieces of jewelry using the etching process.


The class will go over how the etching process works, available metal choices, troubleshooting, and several different resist options as well as finishing tips for etched pieces and how to use etching with other techniques.


No experience required to learn how to etch without acids!


Techniques taught:
• Introduction to the equipment, basic safety for etching
• Discussion: What is Electrolytic Etching?
• Resists: ○ Nail Polish ○ Paint pen
• Preparing metal pieces for etching
• Setting up your Electrolytic Bath and Etching
• Measuring your etch, cleaning your piece post-etch
• Forming and finishing your etched pieces

 

This course is available as an in-person workshop or live online class, and as a 2 week course or 1 day workshop. Please check this page for times and formats available.

A kit of materials is included with this class.
Online students will have kits mailed to them. Kits for in-person students are delivered at the beginning of the first class.

Recordings of class.
If a class is online, or is a combination online and in-person session, all students receive a link to a recording of the class demonstrations. In-person only workshops are not recorded.

Tools.
Classes at our school include use of tools, with each student having their own bench to use during class. Online students will need to have their own tools (see the list of tools below).  Feel free to contact us with any questions.

  • Chain Nose Pliers
  • 1mm twist drill
  • Pin vise for drilling or other method of using the drill bit
  • Duct tape
  • Nail polish
  • Nail polish remover/acetone
  • Cotton rounds or paper towels
  • Scriber
  • Kosher salt (note: it must be kosher salt or pickling salt. Not iodized salt)
  • Nitrile gloves

A computer, phone, or tablet to use the free Zoom app for class

About Our Interactive Online Classes

If this class is offered online, it uses the Zoom app/website. Through Zoom, you’ll be able to see demos and follow instructions, ask questions and interact with your instructor. Zoom is easy to use and free for students to use for class, and works on most devices, like phones (iphone, Android, etc), tablets (iPads, etc), and computers (Mac or PC).

Your instructor is also available during free Zoom office hours for questions and help.

Online students work at home or in their studio. All of our recommended tools and the kit materials are chosen to be home studio friendly. Links to preferred vendors are provided in the supplies list sent after registration.

Prerequisites:

This class is open to beginners. There is a lot to learn in this class for any level, including intermediate students and beyond.
