The term champlevé comes from the French word for "field". In champlevé enameling, open "fields" or cells are created in the metal using a variety of methods including etching and sawing. These cells are filled with colored enamel that is melted and fused to create a smooth surface with distinct delineations between the metal and enamel. This technique is ideal for bold and illustrative imagery.

Champleve technique has been used through the ages dating back well over a millenia, and continues to be a standard in enamelwork today. Students will learn about both the historical and contemporary applications of champleve and will be able to adapt this skill to their own aesthetic.

Exploring color and pattern, various methods of creating the cells, students will bring color into their work! Champleve from imagination through to the finished piece and all the steps in between are covered, with many adaptations along the way.
