Stone setting is central to jewelry making and we cover 3 popular styles in one course: tube, flush and prong setting. Although they look like completely different settings, they actually share a lot in common. All three settings are made using burs, to create the seats for the stones, which makes them a perfect suite for practice.

This course is available as an in-person workshop or live online class. Please check this page for times and formats available.

Tube settings offer the color and beauty of stones to accent your jewelry designs. They’re perfect for small stones - 4mm or less. Tube settings are small stepped bezels made from tubing, perfect for cabochons or faceted stones. Students will make tube settings from scratch and solder them into a sample project, like a pendant.

Flush settings set the stones into the surface of your metal, and bring a sophisticated, modern beauty to jewelry with their beveled and burnished edges. The project for this setting is a sterling ring.

Prong settings are common for setting cabochons and faceted stones. Students will work with prong settings in basket and crown styles. Modifying the prongs for setting will be covered. The settings can be used for a lovely pair of earrings, a pendant or ring.

Techniques covered:
• Tube setting

• Flush setting
• Basket and crown prong setting
• Proper use of setting burs
• Soldering in settings
• Polishing

A kit of materials is included with this class.

Online students will have kits mailed to them. Kits for in-person students are delivered at the beginning of the first class. International students may be charged an additional amount for shipping, because of the increased cost to ship abroad. Also, shipments to other countries may incur a tariff payable by the student. International students are welcome to contact us re: these costs and options for their materials. Please be sure that the address with your payment is the correct one for shipping.

Please review our COVID-19 guidelines for in-person students.
For the health and safety our staff and students, students are required to show proof of vaccination and to wear masks when attending classes at our school. If you can’t meet these requirements, we invite you to take the online version of this class instead, if available. Please visit our COVID-19 Updates page for more information.

Classes at our school include use of tools, with each student having their own bench to use during class. Online students will need to have their own tools (see the list of tools below). Feel free to contact us with any questions.

A full color handout is included with the class.
Create your own workbook with the beautiful handout that is downloadable for this workshop. Handouts include instructions for techniques and projects, reference charts and lots of information to support your learning.

Recordings of class.
If a class is online, or is a combination online and in-person session, all students receive a link to a recording of the class demonstrations. In-person only workshops are not recorded.
