From the Bronze Age to modern times, from function to ornament, the brooch has long been a staple of jewelry forms.

A brooch, or a fibula as it was first known, was first used as a way to fasten cloaks and clothing. It transitioned, as it migrated across the world, into symbols of class and power and then to modern art and personal expression. Take for example former Secretary of State Madeline Albright, whose collection of brooches was not only an element of her style, but also a way to subtly communicate her opinions to diplomats and heads of state.

This class will explore different solutions for creating brooches and then students can create a brooch using one of those techniques. We’ll take a hard look at the back of your pins. Not only will we design how to mount your jewelry to the clothing canvas of the wearer, but also to plant some character and surprises on the humble brooch back so that it’s as fun as the front.

Techniques taught:
• Anatomy of a brooch
• Review of different styles of brooches
• Making custom joins, clutches and pin stems
• Tips and tricks for creating tension, security and clothing friendly pins
• Individual help with designing a brooch
