Mexican silver from Taxco is timeless and unique. Join us for a journey into Mexican silver- how the Taxco region became known for its silver and artistry, inspirations behind the designs, and how these pieces were made. In this class we will look in depth into William Spratling, Margot van Voorhies Carr, the brothers of Los Castillo, and other artists that propelled Mexican silver to collector status. We will be covering various techniques used to create the pieces including impression dies, stamping, marriage of metals, and crushed stone inlay. Students will adapt the design hallmarks and techniques of the period to their own ideas.

Techniques covered include:

  • Stamping, line chasing
  • Use of different silver alloys including 980 silver and sterling
  • Making and using impression dies
  • Marriage of Metals
  • Connections and linkage systems
  • Brooch finding
  • Ear wire fabrication
  • Crushed stone inlay
  • Torch-fired enameling
