Patinas: Coloring Metal (online)

Add more color to your pieces and make your details pop with patinas! Patinas allow you to not only darken the recesses in texture, but also to change the color of the surface of your metal.

In this 4 week class with Jenn Parnell, you will learn about a variety of patinas that you can produce with heat, chemicals and more. Topics covered include: Application methods for patinas, surface preparation, chemical basics, mixing patinas, how patinas interact with different metals, how to make the most of patinas, finishing, and sealing.

Topics covered:
• What are patinas?
• Methods for applying patinas including surface preparation and chemical basics
• How patinas react to different metals
• Finishing and sealing patinas
• Mixing patinas
• Heat patinas
• Demonstrations of a variety of patinas for brass, copper, and sterling.

Tools for this Class

Students can adapt this class to their favorite jewelry technique that they already know, including fabrication, setting, lost wax, enameling and beading. You’ll need the same basic tools you already use to make your jewelry now.

  • Gladware or other sealable containers 
  • Soft rag or paper towel
  • Hot plate
  • Disposable chopsticks or spatula for mixing
  • Bench pin 
  • Saw frame
  • 2/0 or 3/0 or 4/0 saw blades 
  • Needle file set of 6
  • 1mm drill bit
  • Pin vise drill  or flexshaft/dremel
  • Chasing hammer or riveting hammer 
  • Torch 
  • Steel bench block

About Our Interactive Online Classes
This class is online and uses the Zoom app/website. Through Zoom, you’ll be able to see demos and follow instructions, ask questions and interact with your instructor. Zoom is easy to use and free for students to use for class, and works on most devices, like phones (iphone, Android, etc), tablets (iPads, etc), and computers (Mac or PC).

This course meets for 4 weeks, 3 hours per week, for a total of 12 hours. Your instructor is also available during free Zoom office hours for questions and help.

Each class is also recorded and available for students to watch later, to review instructions or in case you missed a class.

Students work at home or in their studio. All of our recommended tools and the kit materials are chosen to be home studio friendly. We always choose the safest materials, chemicals and tools for you and the environment.

Students should have taken Jewelry 1 or an introductory course. Sawing, drilling, and filing skills will be used. Alternatively, if you have copper, brass, or bronze pieces that you have had cast or premade that you want to patina, please contact us and we can pre-cut your metal in the kit.
