Soldering Mastery

Soldering is one of the fundamental building blocks of jewelry fabrication, and can be one of the most challenging to feel confident and comfortable with. Join Jenn Parnell Kirkpatrick for Soldering Mastery and become best friends with your torch!

This course is available as an in-person workshop or live online class. Please check this page for times and formats available.

In this class, Jenn will take you through various soldering exercises, refining your technique and heat control. We will be covering various styles of seams in connecting sheet to sheet, sheet to wire, and wire to wire. We will also work with a variety of methods of soldering, and talk about what is appropriate and efficient for different applications. From larger seams to small details, clean seams to complex construction, this class covers it all!


Techniques covered include:

  • Different grades of solder and their properties
  • Different styles of seams for both sheet and wire
  • Heat and torch control
  • How to choose and use various soldering aids
  • Holding pieces while soldering accurately
  • How to tackle complex fabrication
  • Pallion, stick, and paste soldering
  • Soldering on small details
  • Soldering moving parts
  • Soldering on textured surfaces with control
  • Clean-up tips and tricks

A kit of materials is included with this class.
Online students will have kits mailed to them. Kits for in-person students are delivered at the beginning of the first class.

 

Tools.
Classes at our school include use of tools, with each student having their own bench to use during class. Online students will need to have their own tools (see the list of tools below). Feel free to contact us with any questions.

 

A full color handout is included with the class.
Create your own workbook with the beautiful handout that is downloadable for this workshop. Handouts include instructions for techniques and projects, reference charts and lots of information to support your learning.

 

Recordings of class.
If a class is online, or is a combination online and in-person session, all students receive a link to a recording of the class demonstrations. In-person only workshops are not recorded.

 

About Our Interactive Online Classes

If this class is offered online, it uses the Zoom app/website. Through Zoom, you’ll be able to see demos and follow instructions, ask questions and interact with your instructor. Zoom is easy to use and free for students to use for class, and works on most devices, like phones (iPhone, Android, etc), tablets (iPads, etc), and computers (Mac or PC).

 

Your instructor is also available during free Zoom office hours for questions and help.

Online students work at home or in their studio. All of our recommended tools and the kit materials are chosen to be home studio friendly. Links to preferred vendors are provided in the supplies list sent after registration.

  • Torch- large butane or acetylene/air or propane/oxygen 
  • Extra butane canisters if using butane torch 
  • Soldering set-up- solderite board, pick, pickle 
  • Hard charcoal block
  • Honeycomb or ceramic block
  • Third hand with base
  • Tweezers
  • Paste flux
  • Liquid flux- My-T-Flux, Cupronil, or other liquid flux with applicator or spray bottle
  • Soft brass brush
  • Radials and mandrel
  • Sandpaper assortment
  • Half round hand file
  • Needle files
  • Bench pin
  • Saw frame
  • Saw blades
  • Dremel or flexshaft
  • Rawhide or nylon mallet
  • Steel bench block
  • Steel pins (straight or T, no plastic tops)

Prerequisites:

Prior experience with soldering and fabrication is required. Jewelry 1 and 2 or equivalent experience.
