What do you do if you don’t have the right tool? Make it!

An important part of jewelry is making and modifying tools. In this live Zoom class, you'll learn how to shape and polish hammers for better performance, and custom texture. You can use these same skills to repair your hammer face and remove nicks or scratches.

Students make custom stamps for decoration. We’ll forge, twist and grind steel to make custom tools, like a center punches, scribers, burnishers and scrapers. Annealing, hardening and tempering steel will also be demonstrated

Use these skills to reshape, reuse, and recycle tools, new and old into useful solutions for your jewelry.

Techniques taught:

• modify and polish a hammer to a mirror finish
• make a texture hammer
• sawing and filing custom stamps
• annealing steel
• tempering steel
• forging, grinding and twisting steel to make custom tools
