Steel is lightweight and durable, with a unique look and texture compared to traditional jewelry metals. When combined with gold the effect is striking! Learn how to fuse gold onto steel to make durable and stunning jewelry. Bette Barnett will introduce you to the techniques to saw, solder, file and form steel, as well as how to alloy and prepare gold for fusing to jewelry pieces like bracelets, earrings, and pendants.
• Apply basic jewelry techniques to steel (cutting, sawing, filing, soldering, etc.)
• Prepare gold for fusing to steel
• Fuse steel to gold using a torch
• Apply gold to steel using the Keum Boo technique
• Understand different patination options for steel
• Alloying fine gold into karat gold, like 20K green gold
• Casting gold ingots and using a rolling mill to make sheet
By the end of the workshop, you will have acquired the skills to create fused steel and
gold jewelry, preparing you for further practice and exploration on your own. Projects include fusing 20K green gold onto 18 gauge steel, applying 24K gold to 18 gauge steel with keum boo, and fusing 18K green gold onto iron wire. Students will use these techniques to make jewelry.
