Tubing definition: a hollow form open at both ends, not necessarily round.

Explore the myriad ways to make and use tubing with Alison Antelman! Join, bend, connect, hang, set faceted trillion stones, stretch and hinge, using tubing. Students in this live Zoom class will make 2 projects: a hinged pendant with a trillion stone setting that hangs from a bail created with hand-made bent tubing. As well as pivot earrings  where students learn to stretch tubing that fits a faceted stone for simple earrings that pivot.

A step-by-step handout with images and text is supplied. This is an intermediate level class. Basic fabrication and soldering skills required.

**Students need a bolted down bench vise or, make your own draw pull jig.**

Making your own tubing from flat sheet
Design, layout, function
Fabrication and soldering exercises
Complex trouble shooting
Telescope setting for faceted trillion and round stone
Stretching tubing

About Our Interactive Online Classes
This class is online and uses the Zoom app/website. Through Zoom, you’ll be able to see demos and follow instructions, ask questions and interact with your instructor. Zoom is easy to use and free for students to use for class, and works on most devices, like phones (iphone, Android, etc), tablets (iPads, etc), and computers (Mac or PC).

This course meets for 3 days, 3 hour zoom sessions morning and afternoon each day with a lunch break between, for a total of 18 hours. 

Each class is also recorded and available for students to watch later, to review instructions or in case you missed a class.

Students work at home or in their studio. All of our recommended tools and the kit materials are chosen to be home studio friendly. We always choose the safest materials, chemicals and tools for you and the environment.

Tools for this Class

This is a list of tools you’ll need to practice the techniques shown in class. A list of tools with recommended suppliers for the best prices will be sent to you with your registration receipts If you have questions about the tool list, please contact us.

  • Bench pin
  • Saw frame
  • 2/0 or 3/0 saw blades
  • Half round hand file
  • Needle file set of 6
  • round/flat forming pliers OR Half round/flat forming pliers
  • Chain nose pliers
  • Flush cutters
  • torch (any)
  • hard and medium solder
  • Soldering set-up including: Solderite board or charcoal block, flux(any), pick, third hand, tweezers
  • pickle pot/bowl and pickle
  • Burr life or other blade lubricant
  • Scriber -anything sharp to scribe into metal
  • Metric ruler or other measuring device
  • Tube Cutting Jig OR Miter Jig
  • riveting hammer or similar
  • Sharpie marker
  • Stone setting tools for cabochons including bezel pusher and/or Burnisher
  • *Safety glasses*
  • Pro shears
  • Heavy mallet
  • Pumice wheel or similar
  • Swage Block- wood or delrin plastic. You can also file a round groove in a block of wood.
  • Tubing draw plate
  • Bolted down bench vise OR make your own Draw pull
  • drift pin or similar small mandrel, a tapered scribe can work too.
  • Draw tongs or Vice Grips
