Jewelry 1 - Basics

(place mouse over image for larger view)

Classes at our school include use of tools, with each student having their own bench to use during class. Online students will need to have their own tools (see the list of tools below). Feel free to contact us with any questions. Custom jewelry? Express yourself in metal and stones? This class is your gateway into a world of silver, gold, and gems.

Learn how to use traditional hand tools to make jewelry. We start with simple and fun practice projects to hone your skills and teach you the basics. All with the live support of your instructor. With a little practice you’ll be making your own designs and setting more stones.

This course is available as an in-person workshop or live online class, and as a 4 week course or 2 day workshop. Please check this page for times and formats available.

This course focuses on the basics of fabricating jewelry: sawing, filing, sanding, texturing, stamping, polishing, stone setting - and so much more. Practicing weekly is a great way to build skills that will last.

The instructor will highlight tools and techniques that are safe to use in a home studio and how to set up your workspace, so you can make jewelry at home, too.

As students make the two sample projects, a sawn and pierced pendant and a ring with a stone in a custom bezel setting, they are practicing the soldering and fabrication skills necessary to make jewelry.

Jewelry 1 - Basics teaches the following:

• Making a custom bezel setting for a stone
• Sawing
• Filing
• Sanding
• Soldering
• How to make a ring
• Stamping
• Hammering and texture
• Polishing and patina

A kit of materials and stones is included with this class.

Online students will have kits mailed to them. Kits for in-person students are delivered at the beginning of the first class.

Please review our COVID-19 guidelines for in-person students.
